Wisconsin Supreme Court candidate Vince Megna is calling on two others in the race to turn down any donations that come from outside the state.

Megna challenged incumbent Justice Pat Roggensack and Marquette University law professor Ed Fallone to make a public pledge not to accept out of state money.

Megna’s challenge comes after the filing of campaign finance reports last week that showed Roggensack had about $55,000 in the bank heading into January compared with about $6,900 for Megna and $5,400 for Fallone.

Roggensack’s total didn’t include $20,550 she received in late December from Fund for Parent Choice, a national group that advocates for private school vouchers at the expense of Public School funding.

Roggensack’s spokesman Brandon Scholz calls Megna’s challenge “a typical political attack from candidates who can’t raise money for their own campaign.”

MILWAUKEE (February 4, 2013) – It’s a three-way race right now for Wisconsin Supreme Court justice and with the primary just two weeks away, one candidate is throwing down the gauntlet when it comes to out-of-state donations. Vince Megna has run a fully transparent race, declaring his ideology early on, while the other two candidates continue to skirt the issue, fooling no one as to their party allegiances given the backgrounds of their campaign teams which fall strictly along party lines and, more troubling, holding a hand out for contributions from donors with an agenda. Megna is now asking incumbent Justice Pat Roggensack and Edward Fallone to make a public pledge not to accept out-of-state donations in order for this election to be decided on by the voters of Wisconsin. 

“I’ve said all along that my opponents are not those listed on the ballot but, rather, big business controlling elections,” said Megna. “Billionaires and out-of-state Republican donors with deep pockets are controlling how the law is interpreted here in Wisconsin.”

Megna went on to reiterate a point he’s made since day one of his campaign, that the current Court
is a rubber stamp for the Republican-controlled state.

“Justice Roggensack will have any amount of money she needs, not just several million but $10 million if needed because, in the collective mind of Republican donors, everything is at stake for politically charged cases that come before the Supreme Court,” said Megna. 

Megna is asking both candidates to make a public statement in advance of the Feb. 19 primary that they will not accept out-of-state donations. “This is our court, the people of Wisconsin’s court,” said Megna, “and when candidates accept out-of-state donations while still claiming to be non-partisan, the Court will always be compromised.”

“Let’s make this an election about the ability to serve the citizens of Wisconsin and fairly interpret the law without being beholden to big Republican money,” added Megna. “Let’s send two liberal candidates to the general election.”

Megna made a name for himself by becoming one of the most successful lemon law attorneys in the United States.

He has recently distinguished himself by running for the non-partisan Supreme Court as an unabashed Democrat.

“What came out this past week only proves that it is a partisan race,” said Megna.

Megna says that’s because the campaign finance statement submitted by sitting Supreme Court Justice Pat Roggensack is filled with donations from Republican contributors.

“The Republicans back Justice Roggensack and they back her because they believe that she’s gonna put forth the Republican agenda,” said Megna.

Megna says Roggensack and fellow challenger Ed Fallone, should drop the pretense that they are non-partisan.

“As a candidate for this Supreme Court, our highest court, I owe it to the people that I’m asking to vote for me, to tell them what I am, what I believe,” said Megna.

“It’s proof that this race is not nonpartisan,” Megna said. “It’s proof that the Republicans back Justice Roggensack. And the reason Republicans back Justice Roggensack is because they believe she will promote the Republican agenda.”

Megna – who has touted himself as a Democrat and said calling court races nonpartisan is a sham – contended the donations showed Roggensack is aligned with Republicans.

Roggensack has highlighted the importance of a nonpartisan Supreme Court, but her report showed she took in more than $9,000 from political committees affiliated with the Republican Party. That accounts for more than a quarter of the $34,460 she raised in the second half of 2012.

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel columnist Christian Schneider gives voice to the right-wing ideology that holds sway within the Republican Party of Scott Walker and Paul Ryan. And that’s a good thing. This particular point of view needs to be represented in the state debate by able communicators, as do the views of progressives, liberals, greens, libertarians, centrists and responsible conservatives.

Schneider is generally an able advocate for his ideology.

Generally.

Schneider’s reference in a recent column to state Supreme Court candidate Vince Megna — a consumer-interest lawyer — as a “bottom-feeding greaseball” employed career and ethnic stereotypes that more typically come from the “trolls” in comment sections than from serious commentators.

We disagree with Schneider on many issues, and even on the facts of state debates. But we have always had regard for his communication skills. It is that regard that leads us to believe that he will rethink his crusade against Megna — or, at the very least, the references he uses to advance it. Schneider’s more talented than this.

Supreme Court Candidates Signed Recall

   Both challengers for the State Supreme Court signed last year’s petitions to recall Governor Scott    Walker. Vince Megna and Ed Fallone say if they’re elected to the high court this spring, they might hear cases in which Walker is a plaintiff or defendant.

Megna and Fallone are both running against incumbent Justice Pat Roggensack. The conservative Media Trackers’ group said both her challengers were among the 900,000-plus who signed petitions which forced Walker to stand for election last June.

Megna, a Milwaukee Lemon Law attorney, has produced a series of anti-Walker videos. He said he was motivated to sign the recall petition because Walker had reduced consumer protections.

   Fallone and Megna told reporters during individual question-and-answer sessions that each of them can restore civility to the Supreme Court. The court’s justices are officially nonpartisan, but conservatives and Republicans have typically championed one candidate, while liberals and Democrats have supported another.
